What should I pack for a safari ?

First of all, we recommend soft luggage suitcases because of the space in our Toyota LandCruisers or if you take a light aircraft flight as well. Don’t over pack! There are more places where you can find small laundry services. When choosing clothes, we advice to pack comfortable loose fitting clothes and natural fabrics. Earthy tones suits best on safari or bush activities. If you like to dress nicely for dinner, note that some insects are attracted to white and light colours, so it’s best to go for darker colours!

A list of recommended items to pack is:

  • Poloshirts or t-shirts
  • Long trousers/pants in khaki (day/night)
  • Long and/or short sleeved shirts (day/night)
  • Shorts
  • Underwear and socks
  • Pyjamas (especially for June to August when it’s getting cold)
  • Warm windproof jacket for early morning and night drives (from May to August)
  • Warm jumper/jersey for dining at night (from June to August)
  • Lightweight fleece
  • Casual footwear or sandals
  • Good quality walking shoes/boots
  • Swimming suits
  • Toiletries
  • Hat (wide-brimmed) or cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Binoculars
  • Insect repellent (Deet), sunscreen, lip balm, after sun lotion
  • Powerful torch
  • Power Adaptor (three pin British style plug are most common)
  • Personal first aid and medication kit
  • Camera, extra batteries, extra memory cards, and charging devices

What about health ?

Zambia is regarded as a malarial area and therefore proper prevention, by way of malaria prophylaxis is recommended. Please consult your doctor for the right prophylactic (anti-malarial) medication.

We recommend that you undertake traveller’s medical and travel insurance beforehand. All guides of Zungulila Safaris have undergone extensive first aid training, and all vehicles and boats are linked to base by an extensive radio network – however the best option is always to be covered should the need arise.

Money and Creditcards

The Zambian Kwacha is the local currency. The US Dollar is the most commonly accepted foreign currency within Zambia.

VISA cards (both credit/debit) are readily accepted within Lusaka and Livingstone. MasterCard is still more limited in its acceptance. Amex is difficult to use. Outside the main centres it is best to use cash US dollars.

Note that when using US Dollars, it is best to obtain brand new notes, or notes that are in the best possible condition.

Visa and passport

Visas are required to enter Zambia for most nationalities. The cost for most foreign nationals (including UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most European countries) is US$50 per person.

Depending on your nationality, this may be available to purchase on arrival in Zambia, or you may need to apply for a visa in advance. For up to date information, please contact your travel agent, or refer to http://www.zambiatourism.com/travel/ traveladvice/visa-immigration-info.htm
